GBES Outside Days Guidelines
Governor Bent Elementary School policy is that all students will go outside every day for recess unless weather conditions are unsafe for students such as rain, lightning, wet snow, or the temperature or wind chill drops to 25 degrees or below.
Weather Guidelines
Outdoor play is essential to children’s health and well-being. Children need to run, climb, jump, and play outdoors. The time children spend outdoors each day is just as important to their learning as the time they spend in their classrooms.
We ask that students have winter coats, hats, and gloves each day during the winter season.
The only time students will be allowed to stay in from recess will be with a note from a medical professional stating it is required.
Cold-Related Conditions
Outdoor recess will be held if:
- Outside air temperature and/or wind chill is 25° (F) or greater
- There is no falling precipitation
Limited outdoor recess (meaning there are indoor and outdoor options) may be held if:
- Outside air temperature and/or wind chill is between 25° and 32° (F)
- There is no falling precipitation
Indoor recess will be held if:
- Outside air temperature and/or wind chill is lower than 25° (F) or there is falling precipitation
Children are expected to come to school prepared to participate in outdoor recess. When winter weather conditions exist, it is essential that children have the proper clothing to prevent hypothermia. Hypothermia may result if the body’s heat loss is greater than its rate of producing heat. Appropriate outerwear such as a pair of gloves or mittens, a warm coat, and a hat is essential for healthy and safe outdoor play.
- Below 60 degrees jacket and/or long sleeves recommended
- Below 50 degrees coat and long pants recommended
- Below 40 degrees gloves and hats along with previously mentioned items
- Below 25 degrees indoor recess and PE classes
- According to the Department of Education, there is no national standard for keeping children indoors during school recess.
APS Attendance Guidelines
Regular attendance is a key to school success. On time, daily attendance is a critical component of this educational process. We understand sometimes families may need support to help their child be successful. School staff can direct you to possible resources within the school community. Teachers take attendance daily.
- A parent/guardian must notify the school at 881-9797 ext. 1, when a student is going to be absent. Absences may be excused for the following reasons with appropriate documentation:

- Limited family emergencies; family deaths
- Medical, health or legal appointments
- Suspensions
- Religious commitment All absences for other reasons are unexcused.
